Director of Religious Education (Bilingual)

Job Description

Saint Jude Parish, located at 2801 W. 6th Street, Erie, PA near the beautiful Presque Isle on Lake Erie is looking for a new Director of Religious Education. We have over 200 children in our program and 2,000 registered families in the parish. Our program is one of the largest and most dynamic ministries in the Diocese. We are also partnered with the only Spanish speaking parish (San Esteban) in the Diocese. The DRE is responsible for the coordination and administration of the parish religious education program and sacramental preparation for elementary age children and teenagers who have not received all of the Sacraments of Initiation. This is a full-time position (all year) for a highly motivated individual who feels a calling to teach and form young people in the Catholic faith. We follow the Amazing Parish model of team-based support, Fuller Theological Institute Growing Young and related research models, LifeTeen, Word on Fire and are striving to Reveal Jesus in all aspects of church and community life.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Organize, schedule and oversee the parish’s religious education program for grades K through 9

  • Create small group opportunities and youth group activities for students in 9th grade and beyond with help from other parish support ministers.
    • Prepare, schedule and oversee sacramental programs for students and their parents.
    • Provide for the instruction of high school students who have not been confirmed. We use the EDGE/Purpose program from LifeTeen.
    • Prepare unbaptized children seven years and older for Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist.
    • Foster vocations to the priesthood and religious life, as well as happy and healthy married, single and lay vocations.
  • Lead meetings with parents and children who need or desire extra support.
    • Recruit, train and supervise volunteer catechists, core team members, and aides with the support of other parish ministers.
    • Assure Safe Environment training and documentation of volunteers.
    • Administer annual registration of students with help from parish staff.
    • Prepare annual budget with pastor and business manager for faith formation.
    • Order textbooks, teaching materials and resources for the program following parish and diocesan guidelines.
    • Attend diocesan meetings/training related to position.
    • Participate in ongoing formation and educational opportunities to keep current on trends in catechetical ministry at national conferences and leadership formation events.
    • The parish office supports this position with technology, teaching, formation, retreats, and other aspects of relational ministry to make this a successful endeavor.

    SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
    • Capable administrator (tracking attendance, registration, completing reports, etc.).
    • Confident supervisor of volunteers and children.
    • Excellent communications skills, including in person, on-line and by virtual meetings.
    • Comprehensive knowledge and experience of Catholic doctrine and practice.
    • Competent in use of technological means for advancing religious education.
    • Good teaching ability.

    EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/TRAINING:
    • BA/BS or equivalent experience.
    • Minimum 1 year of some form of Catholic catechist/teaching experience.

    COMPENSATION
    Salary will be commensurate with experience and education. Medical and other benefits are available. Housing may also be available to candidate.
